NAT1
User manual
How to use Nat1
Character sheets, spells, campaigns, the compendium and homebrew — for players, DMs and admins.
1Welcome & roles
Nat1 keeps your D&D characters online. The sheet does the maths (ability modifiers, saving throws, skills, proficiency bonus), tracks spells, spell slots and limited-use features, and saves every change as you make it. Campaigns bring a DM and their players together, and the compendium holds the classes, subclasses, races, feats, spells and class options everyone picks from.
What you can do depends on your role:
| Role | Can do |
|---|---|
| Player | Create and play characters, share them, join campaigns, browse the compendium, and submit homebrew content for review. |
| DM | Everything a player can, plus start and run campaigns: invite players, keep NPCs, log sessions, and limit which content players may pick. |
| Admin | Everything, plus approve or reject homebrew submissions, edit the compendium directly, and manage accounts and categories. |
2Your account
Getting an account
- On the sign-in page, choose Create an account and fill in a username and password.
- This sends a request to the admins. You can sign in once an admin approves it.
- Sign in with the same username and password.
Display name, picture and account changes
Open Settings → Account.
- Display name is what other players see on party rosters and member lists. Your username stays how you sign in.
- Profile picture can be uploaded or removed here.
- New username or password: use Request a change. An admin approves it, and then you set the new details on the same page.
Need a hand? Settings → Message an Admin sends a note to the admins and shows their replies. Locked out? The Need help? link on the sign-in page lists who to contact.
3Staying signed in
You are signed out after one hour without activity. Typing, clicking, scrolling and saving all count, in any Nat1 tab you have open. A sheet simply left open on the screen does not.
- Two minutes before the hour is up, a bar at the bottom of the page counts down. Press Stay signed in to carry on.
- If the time runs out, you land on the sign-in page. After you sign in, you are taken back to the page you were on.
If you are signed out while editing
Nothing is lost. A box appears saying You have been signed out and how many changes are waiting.
- Press Sign in again. The sign-in page opens in a new tab.
- Sign in there. That tab tells you it is done and may close itself.
- Back on your sheet, the box disappears within a few seconds and every waiting change is saved in the order you made it.
Don't close the page while changes are waiting. Your browser will ask before it lets you, because those changes exist only on that page until you sign back in. Sign in with the same account: changes are not saved under someone else's.
4The dashboard
The dashboard is the first page after signing in. It shows your upcoming sessions, your characters and your campaigns.
Create a character
- Press Create a character and give it a name. Everything else is filled in on the sheet.
- Optionally search for people to share it with. Share it with your DM so they can see it during play; you can change this later.
- Press Create sheet. If you shared with nobody, Nat1 checks you meant to.
Join a campaign
Press Join a campaign and paste what your DM sent you: the full invite link, the token on its own, or the campaign number all work. Opening an invite link while signed out takes you straight to the campaign after you sign in.
Your characters
- Open opens the full sheet in a new tab. The phone icon opens the mobile sheet.
- The ⋮ menu has Sharing (add or remove people), Assign campaign (put the character in one of your campaigns) and Delete sheet, which cannot be undone.
- A character someone shared with you has Remove from my library instead. It only removes it from your list.
DMs also see Start a campaign here. See Campaigns.
5The character sheet
Every change saves on its own a moment after you make it. A small Saved note confirms it. There is no save button.
Layout
- Left column: portrait, experience, ability scores, hit points and the rest buttons.
- Tabs across the middle: Skills, Combat & Conditions, Spellcasting & DC, Valuables & Currency, Biography, Backstory & Notes, Spell Descriptions and Bastion (your facilities and hirelings).
- Top bar pop-ups: Actions, Inventory, Class, Race & Feats, Images, History, PDF, Export and Import.
- Parchment switches the sheet between its dark and parchment looks.
The mobile sheet
The mobile sheet shows the same character laid out for a phone, with the pop-ups as a menu of pages. Changes made on one show on the other.
Shared and read-only sheets
People you share a character with can see it. A sheet opened read-only shows everything but can't be changed.
Natural1 link
The Natural1 button in the corner links the sheet to the Natural1 table. Once linked, changes on either side are copied to the other.
6XP, HP, rests & trackers
Experience
The total can't be typed over, which stops accidental changes. Type an amount in the box under it and press + to add it (or just press Enter) or − to take it away. Your level and proficiency bonus follow automatically.
Hit points
Current, temporary and maximum HP work the same way: type an amount, then + or −. Max HP bonuses and penalties go in their own boxes.
Rests, dawn and dusk
| Button | What it restores |
|---|---|
| Long Rest | HP to full, temporary HP cleared, all spell slots, pact slots and hit dice back, and every feature, buff or condition set to reset on a long rest (or Any Rest). |
| Short Rest | Pact magic slots, and every feature, buff or condition set to reset on a short rest (or Any Rest). |
| Dawn | Only features in the feature tracker set to reset at Dawn. |
| Dusk | Only features in the feature tracker set to reset at Dusk. |
Each button lists what it is about to restore and asks before doing it.
Feature tracker
On the Combat & Conditions tab. Use it for anything with limited uses: Rage, Channel Divinity, Lay on Hands, sorcery points.
- Press Add Feature, name it and set Max.
- Choose Resets on: N/A, Long Rest, Short Rest, Any Rest, Dawn or Dusk.
- Mark uses as you spend them.
- Boxes fill up to where you click. Clicking box 7 marks 7 used. Clicking the last used box again gives one back.
- Pools over 10 also get a Use / Regain row. Type 20 and press Use to spend 20 at once. It won't let you spend more than is left.
- Pools over 30 show a bar instead of boxes.
- The circular arrow gives every use back. The cross removes the feature.
7Class, race & feats
Class Features
Open Class in the top bar. Each Class page holds one class, so a multiclass character uses one page per class.
- Pick the class and your level in it. Every feature up to that level appears below.
- On a Sub-Class page, pick the class, then the subclass, then the level.
Class options: invocations, metamagic and more
If the class or subclass on a page has option lists (Eldritch Invocations, Metamagic, Maneuvers), a picker for each list appears under its features.
- Choose from + Add from …. Selected shows how many you have picked. Nothing limits the number.
- Options above the level chosen on that page are marked above this level, as a reminder rather than a block.
- Click an option to read its description, prerequisite and source.
- An option you can take more than once gets a note box, for example to record which feat it gave you.
Race & Feats
In Race & Feats, pick your race on the Race page and add feats on the Feat pages. Their descriptions appear below the picker.
Only content an admin has approved appears in these pickers. Homebrew still waiting for review isn't offered yet.
8Spells
Spellcasting & DC
Choose your spellcasting ability and any bonuses. Spell attack and save DC work themselves out. Add another spellcasting line for each extra class you cast with. Spell slots and pact slots live here too: set the maximum and tick them off as you cast.
Spell Descriptions: picking your spells
Each page from Cantrip to Lvl 9 starts empty. Add the classes you cast from at that level with + Add a class…, then pick spells. Each class works the way its rules do:
| Class type | On the page | Count shown |
|---|---|---|
| Prepares (Cleric, Druid, Paladin) | The class's whole spell list for that level, each with a tick box. Tick the ones you have prepared. | Prepared |
| Knows (Sorcerer, Bard, Warlock, Ranger) | Choose from Learn a spell…. What you pick is what you know. | Known |
| Spellbook (Wizard) | Choose from Add to spellbook…, then tick Prepared on the ones you have ready. | In spellbook · Prepared |
- Cantrips are always known, so on the Cantrip page every class simply picks the ones it knows.
- Other spells takes any spell of that level from any list: subclass spells, spells from an item or a feat. Write where it comes from in the box beside it.
- Click a spell's name to see its school, casting time, range, components, duration and full description, with a View on wikidot ↗ link.
- Adding more than one class to a page is how multiclass casters work. The same spell can sit under two classes.
- Below the picker, the free-text Notes area is still there for anything else. The Lvl 10 and More pages are notes only.
A spell missing from a class's list can still go under Other spells. If a whole class is missing from Add a class…, it hasn't been set up as a spellcaster yet; ask an admin.
9History, PDF & export
- History keeps snapshots of the sheet. Take one before a big change, and restore any snapshot to put the sheet back as it was.
- PDF builds a printable sheet: stats, attacks, class and origin (with your class options), and a Spellcasting page listing every spell you can cast right now. That means prepared spells, cantrips and the spells of a known-spells class.
- Export downloads the whole character as a file. Import loads such a file into this sheet, replacing what's there. A backup snapshot is taken automatically first.
10Campaigns
As a player
Join with your DM's invite (see the dashboard), then use Assign campaign on your character to bring it into the party. The campaign page shows the party, the next session, the session log with the DM's recaps, and the notes and house rules.
As a DM
- Press Start a campaign on the dashboard.
- Under Invite players, copy the invite link and send it to your players.
- Members: remove players, or (as the campaign's main DM) make someone a co-DM.
- NPCs: sheets only the DMs can see. Players never see them.
- Next session: set the date and time; it appears on everyone's dashboard.
- Session log: add a recap after each session and edit it later.
- Notes & house rules are shared with the whole table.
- Allowed content: limit which classes, subclasses, races and feats your players can pick. With the limit off, everything is allowed.
- Campaign settings covers the name and details. The main DM can also delete the campaign here.
11The compendium
Everything available to pick, in one place: Classes, Subclasses, Races, Feats, Spells and Class Options. Nothing here can be edited; that happens in Management.
- Search and category (Official 5e, Official 5.5e, homebrew tiers) work on every tab.
- Spells can also be filtered by level and by class spell list. Class Options can be filtered by option list and by class or subclass.
- Click a class, subclass, race or feat to open it with its full description and level features. Spells and options open where they are.
- Only approved content appears. Homebrew waiting for review stays out of sight until an admin approves it.
12Creating homebrew
Anyone can add classes, subclasses, races, feats, spells, option lists and class options under Management. What you create goes to the admins for review before anyone can use it. That includes you: it won't appear on your own sheets until it is approved.
Submitting
- Open the page for what you're making (for example Management → Feats) and press New feat.
- Fill in the form and press Submit for review.
- For a class or subclass, open the Level features tab after saving and write what it gains at each level.
Your list shows only your own submissions, each with its status:
| Status | What it means |
|---|---|
| Pending review | Waiting for an admin. Nobody else can see it. You can keep editing. |
| Rejected | The admin's reason is shown. Fix it and press Resubmit for review, or delete it. |
| Approved | Live in the compendium and on sheets. It is now locked for you; ask an admin if it needs changing. |
Building something bigger
A homebrew class can come with its own subclass, spells and option lists. You can link those to your own class while it is still pending. Submit the class first, since everything else depends on it.
- Option lists come before their options: make the list (for example "Blood Rites") under Option Lists, then add each option under Class Options.
- On a spell, On the spell lists of decides which classes can pick it from their own list.
13For admins
Reviewing submissions
When submissions are waiting, the Management overview says so, with a link per type.
- Open the type and set the list filter to Pending review. Each entry shows who submitted it.
- Open one. You can edit and save it first if something small needs fixing.
- Press Approve to make it live, or write a reason and press Reject. A rejection needs a reason, and the author sees it.
Approve a homebrew class before its subclasses, spells and option lists. They stay hidden while the class they belong to is still pending.
Editing the compendium
- Anything an admin creates or edits goes live at once.
- Each class has a Spellcasting setting: not a spellcaster, prepares spells, knows spells, or spellbook. It decides how the class works on the Spell Descriptions pages.
- On Spells, Import 2024 spell list adds 456 spells with descriptions, class lists and wikidot links. Running it again only fills in what's missing, such as class links for a class created since. Class lists match by class name, so create classes such as Cleric and Warlock first.
- Fetch descriptions from wikidot fills any spell description that is still empty. It never overwrites one you wrote.
- Categories are the tags (Official 5e, Official 5.5e, homebrew tiers) used to group content.
People and records
- Account Requests: approve new sign-ups and username or password changes.
- Users: create accounts, set roles (player or DM) and admin rights.
- Admin Inbox: messages sent through Message an Admin.
- Character Log: every sheet edit from the last two months. Site Stats: usage figures.
14Troubleshooting
- A box says I have been signed out.
- Press Sign in again and sign in in the new tab. Your changes are saved as soon as you're back. See Staying signed in.
- My DM can't see my character.
- Share it with them from the dashboard (⋮ → Sharing), and assign it to the campaign.
- A spell or class I expect isn't in the picker.
- It may be homebrew still waiting for review, or your DM may have limited the campaign's content. A spell missing from a class list can go under Other spells.
- I can't edit my homebrew any more.
- Approved submissions are locked for their author. Ask an admin to make the change.
- The page looks out of date after an update.
- Reload the page. If it still looks wrong, reload while holding Shift.
- I entered the wrong XP.
- Type the difference in the XP box and press − (or +).
